Daniel Ntontolo est né à Brazzaville en 1950 en république du Congo. Daniel Ntontolo se considère comme un autodidacte: il entre au collège mais très vite se retrouve à l’École de Peinture de Poto-Poto de Brazzaville, avant de voyager pour la France et d’entrer à l’École des beaux-arts de Luminy, à Marseille. Daniel Ntontolo dit Ntota, comme de nombreux artistes, aime peindre quand il se sent inspiré et en a envie. Pour lui, un secret divulgué n’est plus un secret !
Comment qualifierez-vous votre départ du Congo ?
Avant mon départ pour la France suivre une formation à l’école des beaux-arts de Marseille, j’avais déjà acquis une grande expérience en tant qu’artiste, peintre confirmé, parmi les artistes de l’École de Peinture de Poto-Poto de Brazzaville. Je qualifierai ce départ comme une belle découverte d’un monde qui m’était pratiquement inconnu, une chance extraordinaire de rencontrer des artistes de différents pays; cela m’a beaucoup apporté et a contribué à une large évolution dans l’éclosion de mon travail.
La peinture, la sculpture et la photographie sont des arts visuels et vous avez choisi la peinture !
J’ai choisi la peinture à la place de la photographie, de la musique ou de la sculpture, c’est simplement que depuis mon jeune âge, j’aimais beaucoup le dessin, j’avais toujours les meilleures notes de ma classe, en dessin. J’avais pris l’habitude de dessiner inlassablement partout, sur le sable, par terre, notamment sur les murs de la boutique de mon cousin. Un jour un client remarque mes dons et me conseille d’aller à l’Ecole de Peinture de Poto-Poto pour y suivre une formation adéquate.
Quel rôle joue alors la peinture dans votre vie intérieure ?
La peinture joue un rôle primordial dans ma vie privée, je peins par nécessité pour préserver mon équilibre mental, pour exprimer la vie, la joie, l’angoisse et les colères.
Pouvez-vous parler d’influence ?
Quand je suis arrivé à l’Ecole de Peinture de Poto-Poto, je ne connaissais pas le monde des arts, mis à part quelques artistes Congolais. Je ne savais pas ce qui se passait artistiquement ailleurs dans le monde. J’ai donc été influencé en premier par mon maître Jacques Zigoma le célèbre artiste peintre Congolais qui m’a reçu à l’Ecole de Peinture Poto-Poto, et qui m’a suivi tout au long de ma formation. Ensuite, j’ai découvert Fernand Léger et Salvador Dali pour leurs couleurs et l’originalité de leur art
Art africain et art occidental : une possible fusion ?
En effet, l’art africain et l’art occidental peuvent fusionner ensemble. La peinture est un art sans frontière comme la musique, il est universel. L’art africain et l’art occidental ont en commun la liberté, la folie et la création. On peut les montrer ensemble partout dans le monde.
Quels souvenirs vous laissent les expositions ?
Les expositions de groupes avec des artistes venus d’ailleurs et la visite des musées m’ont fait découvrir beaucoup d’autres artistes et les peintures du monde entier. C’est comme une grande école où on apprend énormément de choses.
Quels sujets vous interpellent le plus ?
Je suis passionné par plusieurs sujets, très différents les uns les autres, parmi mes toutes premières toiles on trouve les sujets suivants : Après la pluie dans la forêt, le rat pris au piège, le champ d’arachides, la mère et ses jumelles, en traitant aussi des sujets traditionnels comme : masques de fétiches, masques de danse, masques bakota… Au fil des ans, les thèmes et les sujets ont beaucoup évolué par des titres comme : La traversée du fleuve Congo, La princesse Makela, La visite de la mangrove en pirogue, Le revers de la médaille, La mort des abeilles au sud du Sahara, La roue qui tourne, Les faux sages de la République, (ci-dessous) Les réfugiés de l’île aux champignons, Le champ de manioc pollué par le pétrole…
Comment naît donc l’idée d’une toile ?
L’idée d’une toile naît dans le cœur de l’artiste le plus souvent par apport à sa vie du moment, à l’actualité du moment et de son l’humeur du jour, à des rêves et souvenirs récents ou anciens qui hantent l’esprit de l’artiste.
Le mariage de vos couleurs a-t-il une explication particulière ?
Le mariage des couleurs n’est pas une une expérience partagée lors des rencontres avec les autres artistes, mais plutôt une technique, une sorte de signature personnelle, propre à chaque artiste amoureux de la peinture.
Comment se déroule la journée d’un peintre?
La journée dans la vie d’un artiste ne fonctionne pas toujours de la même façon, cela dépend surtout de son humeur à savoir s’il est inspiré ou pas : s’il ne l’est pas, il choisira à faire autre chose que de peindre, par exemple sortir de son atelier, aller voir un film au cinéma, aller marcher dans la nature ou rencontrer des amis pour se changer les idées. En résumé un artiste ne prend les pinceaux que quand il a l’inspiration et l’envie de peindre.
Un conseil aux jeunes qui aimeraient se lancer dans la peinture ?
Ce que je peux dire aux jeunes qui rêvent de peindre, c’est qu’ils aient une volonté sans faille et aiment la peinture pour réussir. Ne pas se décourager quand on a raté une toile, travailler sur ses propres créations et non faire des reproductions du travail des autres artistes.
Des prix, des distinctions?
Non, je n’ai jamais reçu de prix ni de récompenses encore moins de distinctions. Je n’aime pas les concours.

J’ai quelques secrets mais que je les garde pour moi, parce que, un secret divulgué cesse d’en être un.
