Marie Jo Bourdin a passé son enfance à Bordeaux où elle a fait ses études secondaires. De formation assistante sociale (études à Paris) elle est thérapeute psycho sociale. Elle a par ailleurs une licence et une maîtrise en sciences sociales et suivi des séminaires de psychanalyse.
Vous êtes une des auteures de l’anthologie À L’OMBRE DES VOIX publiée aux Éditions L’Harmattan Sénégal, comment aviez-vous vécu cet appel au projet?
J’ai été très honorée par cet appel à projet et je suis fière d’avoir pu y participer.
La pandémie vous a-t-elle rendue plus sensible à la souffrance humaine et faire entendre votre voix paraissait utile?
Après avoir côtoyé la souffrance psychique des Populations migrantes et réfugiées pendant presque 40 ans, je pense que ma sensibilité est restée la même et elle m’a aidée dans le soutien des personnes en souffrance. Le retour que j’ai eu des personnes que j’ai soutenues me fait penser que ma voix leur a été utile.
Les nouvelles technologies, un outil de rapprochement efficace quand la maladie nous éloigne de nos familles, nos amis, nos proches ?
Oui ces nouvelles technologies sont extraordinairement précieuses pour nous rapprocher des êtres qui nous sont chers quelle que soit la distance qui nous sépare. La période de pandémie en est un bel exemple.
Qu’est-ce que la pandémie a changé ou apporté de bien dans votre vie professionnelle?
Ça peut paraître paradoxal mais je dirai un certain confort.
Dans votre notice biographique de l’anthologie, il est écrit : « Marie Jo Bourdin travaille depuis presque 40 ans sur la question des mutilations génitales féminines ». Comment êtes-vous arrivée à supporter cette cause?
Formée à l’anthropologie médicale clinique (une approche théorique qui permet la compréhension et la gestion de la relation soignant/soigné relation en contexte d’interculturalité), j’ai appris le décentrage. Par ailleurs le travail en équipe pluridisciplinaire est un réel soutien et bien sûr la supervision psychanalytique.
Pensez-vous qu’un jour ces mutilations cesseront face aux cris des femmes qui se lancent, de plus en plus nombreuses, dans la dénonciation de cette horreur physique mais aussi psychologique?
Je pense qu’elles cesseront mais qu’il faudra du temps et que malheureusement des petites filles vont encore être mutilées car il s’agit de changer les mentalités et comme nous le savons il n’y a rien de plus difficile que de vouloir changer les mentalités. Un espoir tous ces jeunes qui sont en train de se mobiliser pour l’éradication des MGF.
Combien de femmes dans le monde pensez-vous sont excisées? Vos articles et vos livres ont-ils un impact dans la vie de ces femmes qui osent vous confier leur vie de femmes excisées?
Les derniers chiffres de L’UNICEF qui datent de 2017 évoquent 200 millions de femmes ayant subi cette mutilation avec 6 millions de nouveaux par an. Celles qui viennent se confier n’ont pas besoin de mes livres pour être impactées. Peut-être est-ce un plus pour elles? Quant à celles qu’il faudrait convaincre je pense qu’elles ne me liront pas.
Comment comprendre que dans l’affaire de l’excision, ce sont des femmes qui font, permettez-moi l’expression, « le sale boulot »?
Difficile en effet de comprendre alors que ces femmes savent ce qu’elles même ont subi. Preuve que dans cette affaire la grande coupable c’est la tradition. Une tradition qui a la peau dure. C’est souvent ce que je dis à mes patientes. J’ai beaucoup entendu dire l’excision est une « affaire de femmes » et que « les femmes en font leur affaire.» Personnellement je pense que ce n’est pas qu’une affaire de femmes, les hommes ont leur part de responsabilité.
Un souhait, un conseil?
Que les religieux disent haut et fort (quand ils le peuvent! Car dans certains pays ils sont parfois menacés) que cette pratique n’est pas une prescription coranique comme l’a fait cet imam sénégalais que l’on a surnommé « l’imam pèlerin » qui partait de village en village son Coran sous le bras pour dire que ce n’était écrit dans le livre Saint
Que les hommes aussi se mobilisent. Tous les hommes que j’ai vu prendre position ont résisté à la pression familiale et leurs filles n’ont pas été excisées!
Surtout ne pas succomber à cette tendance de vouloir médicaliser l’excision (Guinée Conakry, Indonésie) car même si elle rassure sur les conséquences médicales immédiates (hémorragies, décès…) elle perpétue la pratique. Si on médicalise l’excision ne disparaîtra pas.

Axolotl problems

The famous pink axolotls, as well as other color variants such as white, blue, yellow and black, are genetic anomalies that are rare in the wild but selectively bred for in the pet trade.
What’s more, “most of the animals in the pet trade have a very small genetic variance,” Zambrano said. Pet axolotls tend to be inbred and lack the wide flow of different genes that makes up a healthy population in the wild. That means that the axolotl extinction crisis can’t simply be solved by dumping pet axolotls into Lake Xochimilco. Fame and misfortune
The difficulties that axolotls face in the wild are almost diametrically opposed to the fame they’ve found in recent years. The introduction of axolotls to Minecraft in 2021 neatly mapped onto an uptick in Google searches for the animals, and social media makes it easy for people to gain access to photos and videos of the salamanders, particularly the photogenic pink ones often kept as pets.
The axolotl pet trade probably doesn’t directly harm the wild populations since wild salamanders aren’t being poached or taken from Lake Xochimilco. However, Zambrano said, axolotls’ ubiquity in pop culture and pet stores might make people assume that because axolotls “live in all the tanks around the world, they are not in danger.”

A scientific mystery
Axolotl is a word from Nahuatl, the Indigenous Mexican language spoken by the Aztecs and an estimated 1.5 million people today. The animals are named for the Aztec god Xolotl, who was said to transform into a salamander. The original Nahuatl pronunciation is “AH-show-LOAT”; in English, “ACK-suh-LAHT-uhl” is commonly used.
Axolotls are members of a class of animals called amphibians, which also includes frogs. Amphibians lay their jelly-like eggs in water, and the eggs hatch into water-dwelling larval states. (In frogs, these larvae are called tadpoles.)
Most amphibians, once they reach adulthood, are able to move to land. Since they breathe, in part, by absorbing oxygen through their moist skin, they tend to stay near water.

The cost of tariffs has become “prohibitive to almost every company,” Tianchen Xu, senior economist at Economist Intelligence Unit.
“As a result, trade flows in both directions will tumble, and irregular trade will proliferate, including smuggling, transshipment and systemic under-reporting of trade value during customs clearance,” Xu said in a note.
Xu said trade negotiations and a partial de-escalation in the ongoing trade war may ensue in the coming months, but those tensions are likely to worsen in the short term between the world’s two largest economies.

To add to the axolotls’ problems, invasive fish species such as carp and tilapia were introduced to the lake, where they feed on axolotl eggs. And a 1985 earthquake in Mexico City displaced thousands of people, who found new homes in the area around the lake, further contributing to the destruction of the axolotls’ habitat.
These combined threats have devastated axolotl populations. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are fewer than 100 adult axolotls left in the wild. The species is considered critically endangered.

While the wild axolotls of Lake Xochimilco have dwindled to near-extinction, countless axolotls have been bred for scientific laboratories and the pet trade. “The axolotl essentially helped establish the field of experimental zoology,” Voss said.
In 1864, a French army officer brought live axolotls back to Europe, where scientists were surprised to learn that the seemingly juvenile aquatic salamanders were capable of reproduction. Since then, scientists around the world have studied axolotls and their DNA to learn about the salamanders’ unusual metamorphosis (or lack thereof) as well as their ability to regrow injured body parts.
In addition to their role in labs, axolotls have become popular in the exotic pet trade (though they are illegal to own in California, Maine, New Jersey and Washington, DC). However, the axolotls you might find at a pet shop are different from their wild relatives in Lake Xochimilco. Most wild axolotls are a dark grayish brown. The famous pink axolotls, as well as other color variants such as white, blue, yellow and black, are genetic anomalies that are rare in the wild but selectively bred for in the pet trade.
What’s more, “most of the animals in the pet trade have a very small genetic variance,” Zambrano said. Pet axolotls tend to be inbred and lack the wide flow of different genes that makes up a healthy population in the wild. That means that the axolotl extinction crisis can’t simply be solved by dumping pet axolotls into Lake Xochimilco. Take one look at an axolotl, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. With their wide eyes, upturned mouths and pastel pink coloring, axolotls look cheerful and vaguely Muppet-like.
They’ve skyrocketed in pop culture fame, in part thanks to the addition of axolotls to the video game Minecraft in 2021. These unusual salamanders are now found everywhere from Girl Scout patches to hot water bottles. But there’s more to axolotls than meets the eye: Their story is one of scientific discovery, exploitation of the natural world, and the work to rebuild humans’ connection with nature.
A scientific mystery
Axolotl is a word from Nahuatl, the Indigenous Mexican language spoken by the Aztecs and an estimated 1.5 million people today. The animals are named for the Aztec god Xolotl, who was said to transform into a salamander. The original Nahuatl pronunciation is “AH-show-LOAT”; in English, “ACK-suh-LAHT-uhl” is commonly used.
Axolotls are members of a class of animals called amphibians, which also includes frogs. Amphibians lay their jelly-like eggs in water, and the eggs hatch into water-dwelling larval states. (In frogs, these larvae are called tadpoles.)
Most amphibians, once they reach adulthood, are able to move to land. Since they breathe, in part, by absorbing oxygen through their moist skin, they tend to stay near water.
Axolotls, however, never complete the metamorphosis to a land-dwelling adult form and spend their whole lives in the water.
“They maintain their juvenile look throughout the course of their life,” Voss said. “They’re teenagers, at least in appearance, until they die.”
