Lattes, décembre 2018, est le dernier livre publié par Henri Lopes, nouvelliste, romancier, essayiste, mais aussi homme politique du Congo-Brazzaville. «Il est déjà demain», un livre d’errance et de métissage, d’amour et de passion. Un livre, un guide, une quête intérieure dont la soif n’est pas étanchée. Henri Lopes, un nouvelliste et romancier qui ne connait pas d’année blanche depuis «Tribaliques», son premier recueil de nouvelles à «Il est déjà demain», son dernier récit. Henri Lopes, auteur des deux deux rives de l’impétueux fleuve Congo, porte avec joie les gerbes de son abondante production littéraire.
Nostalgie, mélancolie, car dans Il est déjà demain revivent les chemins poudrés de la mémoire : cet ouvrage, une autobiographie de vos rêves, vos émotions, l’homme 
intérieur qui pousse un long soupir de contentement ?
Soupir ? Non. Surtout pas contentement de soi. L’autosatisfaction, c’est la mort. Une plongée en soi-même, plutôt. D’abord, besoin, pour qui est lui-même issu de croisements, de se situer par rapport aux mondes dans lesquels il a évolué. Dans le temps (deux demi-siècles), dans l’espace (migrations successives et voyages), culturellement. Culturellement surtout. Ensuite, tentative pour faire le bilan d’un parcours. Enfin volonté de léguer un témoignage : à ma descendance, à mes congénères, à une société qui néglige trop sa mémoire aussi bien qu’aux sociétés qui accumulent les archives. Témoignage de quelqu’un qui aura vécu à cheval sur deux rives, sur deux continents, sur deux siècles. Le tout, le livre le dit explicitement, plus sur le ton du romancier, du créateur, que celui de l’historien.
La recherche de soi, une longue quête enfin achevée, assouvie, le chercheur d’Afriques peut enfin classer le dossier des identités flamboyantes au chœur de lys ?
La réponse est dans la première question. Mais ces quêtes-là demeurent incomplètes, inachevées. Le dossier n’est jamais classé.
L’amitié un fil d’or qui ne se brise qu’à la mort : sur le fil de l’amitié, vous avez croisé Sony Labou Tansi, Sylvain Bemba, Jean-Baptiste Tati-Loutard, Tchicaya UTam’si et bien d’autres, quels souvenirs en gardez-vous ?
Il faudrait un livre pour dire chacun d’eux. Comme vous l’avez sans doute constaté, au fil de mes pages, je parle de tous. Il est regrettable qu’ils soient partis trop tôt et nul d’entre eux n’ait eu le loisir de raconter son voyage. Sony ? Un volcan en éruption continue, la recherche effrénée de nouvelles formes de créations. Au bout du compte, une météorite qui laisse une griffure éblouissante dans le ciel.
Sylvain Bemba ? Le sage, l’ermite, l’aède, le griot.
Jean-Baptiste Tati-Loutard ? Un orfèvre, un peintre, un musicien. La palette la plus large de couleurs et de mots au sein de la francophonie. Car Tati-Loutard, n’est pas seulement un poète congolais, c’est un grand poète francophone.
Tchicaya U Tam’si ? L’enfant terrible, un révolté, un écrivain exigeant dans son travail de création, le pionnier qui nous a ouvert et montré la voie. C’est surtout sa poésie, sublime parmi les sublimes, qui restera. Une poésie qui dit le Congo, les deux Congo, le pont sur le Congo, une poésie qui trouve un écho dans la fibre intime des femmes et des hommes de cinq continents, des îles aussi bien que des espaces sidéraux.
De toute votre création littéraire, vous vous êtes illustré dans la nouvelle, le roman. Pas de théâtre. De la poésie, on se souvient plus du poème du côté du Katanga pour pleurer Patrice Lumumba, ce héros des indépendances du Congo Kinshasa. Comment s’est opéré le choix des genres ?
«Du côté du Katanga» est surtout connu au Congo. Si j’en juge par les tirages de mes livres, ce sont les romans qui sont les plus lus dans le reste de l’Afrique et dans le monde. Il n’y a pas eu choix, mais métamorphoses successives : poésie à la naissance parce que,

dans le sillage du mouvement de la négritude, elle s’imposait ; puis, prise de conscience que la poésie est un genre majeur, suprême, sacré ; qu’on n’a le droit d’y recourir qu’à bon escient; que si l’on est sûr que ce qu’on veut exprimer ne peut pas l’être dans d’autres genres. Que de poèmes qui ne sont pas poésie ! D’où le passage à la prose. A la nouvelle pour commencer, avant de découvrir que la nouvelle est aussi un genre noble qui a ses règles. D’où le glissement vers le roman. Pourquoi, n’ai-je jamais tâté au théâtre ? Peut-être une infirmité ! … Mais est-il nécessaire de jouer de tous les instruments pour être musicien ? Ainsi de la création littéraire, non ? Le contenu commande la forme.
Écriture et politique : combat de titans, détonation ou folie à revivre si vous aviez plusieurs vies ?
Je ne suis pas le premier à avoir eu une double vie. Voyez Senghor, voyez Césaire, voyez Jacques Roumain et Jacques Stephen-Alexis. L’époque a commandé cette situation ce grand écart, cette situation bancale… Il n’y a malheureusement pas d’autre vie et l’horizon se rapproche. Vous avez raison, en regard du bleu paradis de la création littéraire, le pouvoir est vraiment l’enfer. Il faut y conserver sa lucidité. Je crois l’avoir fait. Il faut aussi assumer tous les choix de sa vie. Je m’efforce de le faire.
Des projets ?
Bien sûr, sinon c’est la mort. Mais, en parler, dit-on, porte malheur.
Un dernier mot ?
Je voudrais en avoir à dire plus d’un, émettre plus d’une phrase, écrire encore des pages et des pages. Mais un écrivain n’écrit-il pas encore, quand il n’écrit pas ?
