Mamadou Mahmoud N’dongo est originaire du Sénégal et vit à Paris. Il n’écrit pas que des romans. Les genres nouvelle, récit, pièce de théâtre et scenario font partie de son répertoire. La photographie est aussi une de ses passions. Cinéaste, il a produit des films qualifiés de « fiction expérimentale. » Notons les plus marquants: Le mangeur d’hélium (1994), L’oeil (1995), Alors j’ai préféré la nuit (2019). Il aime les voyages.
Qui, de l’écrivain ou du cinéaste est né le premier?
L’écrivain est né du cinéaste, c’est Madame Dagan ma professeur en cinématographie, avec qui j’avais une formation de scénariste et de critique, qui m’a vivement encouragé à devenir écrivain. Je me prédestinais à être scénariste et cinéaste. Selon elle, c’était dommage car j’avais de bonnes dispositions dont la première qualité pour devenir écrivain : le style et la seconde : l’imagination.
Il y a des virus qui nous traumatisent comme il y en a qui nous élèvent : comment le virus de l’écriture vous a-t-elle façonné?
Il y a des textes traumatisants, dérangeants, beaux, par exemple ceux de Gabrielle Wittkop, Ballard, Mishima, Césaire, Bolaño, Dostoïevski, Arénas, Borges, Simon, Robin Cook l’anglais, Cheever… et bien d’autres écrivains, Duras, Faulkner, Ted Lewis, Koltès… ce sont des écrivains qui m’ont permis de me transcender, de repousser mon écriture, donc c’est une chance d’être traumatisé ou élevé, ce qui importe c’est la rencontre…
La géométrie des variables est votre troisième roman et il parle de politique : la sagesse populaire dit souvent que politique rime avec mensonge, qu’en pensez-vous?
La politique c’est aussi Mandela… la politique ne rime pas avec mensonge, le problème ne vient pas de la politique mais beaucoup des politiciens… un acteur disait « Il n’y a pas de petits rôles, il y a de petits acteurs ! » Je préfère une autre sagesse populaire qui dit : « Un politicien pense à la prochaine élection. L’homme d’État, à la prochaine génération. » C’est de James Freeman Clarke.
Mais vous avez également publié La concordance des temps, L’errance de Sidiki Ba, Golda Kane et bien d’autres titres encore : quel est selon vous, l’élément déclencheur qui vous pousse à écrire un roman ou une pièce de théâtre ou un scénario?
J’ai plusieurs affluents, ça peut être un documentaire comme pour « Bridge Road », le documentaire Sud de Chantal Akerman, pour « L’Errance… » c’est un vieux soldat croisé au Sénégal… 
« Golda Kane » une interrogation sur l’hérédité, et « La concordance des temps » 
sur la fabrique du consentement… ça peut aussi venir d’un fait divers d‘une anecdote, d’un film, ou tout simplement d’une association d’idées, d’un prénom, d’un tableau… d’un spectacle… ou hélas des attentats de 2015 comme pour « Bruits Blancs »
Dans votre imaginaire créateur, le théâtre vient-il avant le roman? D’où puisez-vous la trame de vos personnages?
Le théâtre vient après le roman, et comme pour le roman ou le cinéma, et pour mes personnages cela vient de mes lectures, de mes rencontres, de mes voyages.
Le monde du cinéma est-il une autre voie pour mieux décrire votre soif de créer, de partager, d’instruire et d’apporter de l’espérance?
C’est tout à fait ça, surtout chaque art est différent. Faire un film est un travail collectif mais un collectif différent de celui du théâtre, au contraire du roman, qui est la quintessence de l’œuvre individuelle. Dans mon cas c’est le sujet qui décide de sa forme, de devenir un film, une pièce, une photographie, un roman, une nouvelle, un récit ou bien un poème…
Vous sentez-vous découragé ou révolté des fois face aux injustices du monde?
Non, puisque j’agis.
Avec la pandémie qui secoue la planète, quels défis vous êtes-vous fixés pour ne pas baisser les bras?
Je suis contemporain de mon époque, donc je la commente, je l’analyse, je l’observe, je l’ausculte.
Que représente donc la photographie dans votre quotidien? Un signe pour marquer l’histoire du monde? Et que photographiez-vous?
Un art de voir et de se souvenir. Je photographie ce que je vois… j’aime particulièrement les portraits.
Vous sentez-vous prêt à monter une école de cinéaste, photographe ou écrivain ou pensez-vous que le talent suffit amplement pour créer?
Le talent ne suffit pas, mais c’est mieux d’en avoir. Créer une école, non.
Des fois on emprunte telle ou telle voie à cause des influences vécues : peut-on parler d’influences dans votre cas dans l’écriture, le cinéma, la photographie?
Parfois, je pars de situations que j’ai vécues, dans mes œuvres de fiction, je crois que c’est dû au fait que je tiens un journal, je conseille à tout artiste de faire de même, le journal est un outil d’une acuité précieuse.
Êtes-vous arrivé au bout de vos rêves et pouvez-vous dire que la réussite n’est pas un vain mot?
Même au-delà…
La montée de la femme dans la création artistique et culturelle aujourd’hui est inévitable : serait-ce un signe de progrès dans la société sénégalaise, africaine, mondiale?
Disons plutôt elles s’autorisent, je vis en Europe à Paris et même à Paris, je peux témoigner du nombre d’artistes femmes qui s’autocensurent, c’est une bonne chose la confiance en soi, mais c’est une construction.
