Nina WATEKO, à l’état-civil, s’appelle Nina Francisca Noel WATEKO. Elle est artiste chanteuse et interprète. Elle a vu le jour le 06 mars 1992 à Saint-Benoît Boundji en République du Congo. C’est à l’âge de 12 ans, notamment en 2004, qu’elle commence à faire une cour assidue à la musique, en raison de nombreuses influences de son entourage. Elle est donc originaire du Congo-Brazzaville. Wateko n’est pas un nom de scène mais c’est son nom de famille. Wateko a une signification particulière et veut dire « Celui qui a été vendu ou trahi. » Cependant, l’artiste choisit de s’appeler Nina Wateko pour le monde musical. Et Nina Wateko vient de gagner un prix international à Rome, en Italie depuis le 09 avril 2022 !
En lisant les articles vous concernant dans les médias, nous constatons que votre amour pour le chant est avant tout un héritage familial : votre mère et votre oncle en sont les bases essentielles! Comment la transmission s’est-elle effectuée entre votre mère et votre oncle d’abord et entre eux et vous?
Mon oncle Jean Itoua et ma mère Bernadette Itoua sont des chanteurs. Je suis née et j’ai grandi dans cette ambiance musicale et artistique.
Il est visible que vos parents vous ont influencée, y a-t-il d’autres artistes du Congo et d’ailleurs qui vous marquent?
Oui. J’adore ce que font mes compatriotes musicalement. Je suis sur leur pas. Je m’intéresse à ce qu’ils font. Surtout quand c’est bien fait, car le bien est bien et le beau est beau en matière d’art. A l’international j’écoute beaucoup Angélique Kidjo, Charlotte Dipanda, Yemi Alade, les stars de l’afrobeat nigérians et du jazz américain. Sans écouter les autres sons venant d’ailleurs comment pouvons-nous être capable de faire une musique de fusion, de l’afro-jazz et autres?
A quel moment aviez-vous finalement réalisé que la musique est votre vie?
Je chante depuis l’âge de 12 ans dans les chorales religieuses jusqu’à ce jour. Aujourd’hui, j’en ai 30. J’avais compris que la musique faisait partie de ma vie depuis que j’étais leader dans les différentes chorales de Brazzaville au Congo. La musique est mon champ, car je me suis certaine que j’ai le son dans mon sang, la musique mon ADN!
Votre mère et oncle sont-ils allés à l’école de la musique traditionnelle?
En Afrique, nous n’avons pas besoin d’aller dans un conservatoire pour apprendre à chanter. C’est inné. La vie de l’homme africain rythmée et chantée dans tous le sens du mot. La chanson ou chanter c’est dans notre ADN. Chez nous en famille, tout le monde chante : Mes oncles, mes tantes, frères et sœurs sont tous des chanteurs ou des musiciens instrumentistes.
Aujourd’hui, avec la rumba comme patrimoine de l’UNESCO, comment allez-vous vous investir pour maintenir la cadence de la création?
Personnellement, je crains que cette entrée de la rumba comme patrimoine immatériel de l’humanité reste un vain mot au niveau des décideurs et tous ceux qui ont voix au chapitre. Parce qu’il ne s’agit pas seulement d’inscrire dans les annales de l’UNESCO que dorénavant la rumba congolaise est devenue un patrimoine de l’humanité. Mais, il faudrait qu’il y ait aussi des mesures d’accompagnement de cette inscription à l’UNESCO sur le terrain artistico-musical de tous les « Rumbamberos » ou chanteurs de la rumba. La rumba est une expression musicale et un univers musical qui a pignon sur rue dans les deux Congo.
Quelles sont ces mesures d’accompagnement et sa politique de mise en œuvre?
Nous, artistes nous effectuons un travail de l’esprit, l’art n’a pas d’à-peu-près : nous avons besoin de structures tels que des salles de spectacles et des sponsors pour nous accompagner dans nos différentes créations artistes. A titre d’exemple, le 12 mars 2022, j’ai joué à Brazzaville à l’Institut Français du Congo (Ex CCF de Brazzaville), sans sponsor, malgré le fait que j’ai envoyé des lettres de demande de sponsoring à certaines sociétés de la place qui soutiennent 1 ou 2 artistes seulement, je n’ai pas seulement eu gain de cause, mais je n’ai pas reçu de réponse. Or, il faut louer la salle de l’Institut Français du Congo à la hauteur de plusieurs centaines de franc CFA. Sans sponsor, comment un musicien congolais peut-il exprimer son art ou comment peut-il exposer son projet musical au fonctionnaire de l’industrie musicale au Congo?
Un autre exemple : je dois aller représenter la République du Congo dans plusieurs festivals en Afrique, Europe et au Canada. J’ai lancé un appel aux sponsors et à des personnes de bonne volonté ou mélomanes de la musique pour me venir en aide. Malgré des lettres de demande d’aide pour la mobilité (billets de voyage) de mon groupe et moi (artistes-musiciens), zéro comme réponse. Comment pouvons-nous faire (nous les artistes et créateurs des œuvres de l’esprit) pour aller présenter et promouvoir cette même rumba qui est devenue patrimoine immatériel de l’humanité sans pouvoir voyager par manque des mesures d’accompagnement et sans soutien financier?
Êtes-vous une artiste solo ou vous faites-vous accompagner par d’autres artistes? Si oui quelles sont les difficultés inhérentes à ce groupe?
J’ai mon groupe d’accompagnement qui se nomme « Wateko Groove Band », composé de huit artistes musiciens et chanteurs. La grande difficulté demeure le manque de soutien financier et de sponsoring, sans oublier le manque des vrais professionnels de l’industrie musicale pour nous accompagner en tout et pour tout : manque notoire de mécènes, des événementiels, des producteurs, des labels, des booking agents et de tour manager. Ce manque est un frein criard pour la mobilité des artistes, pour la création musicale. Cela tue l’art dans l’œuf.
Afro-jazz, afro-gospel comment liez-vous ces musiques d’ailleurs à votre musique traditionnelle comme la rumba ou le folklore?
Ce lien ne me pose aucun problème dans ma création artistique ni dans mon univers musical. Ma musique est une fusion de mes influences musicales venant du jazz, blues, de la rumba et du folklore congolais pour ne pas perdre mon originalité musicale. C’est cela aussi ma philosophie artistique et musicale que je nomme : « La Ninalogie » qui serait aussi le titre éponyme de mon prochain album de 12 titres qui est en préparation au studio sous le contrôle de mon Directeur Artistique Jean Emile Biayenda, qui n’est plus à présenter dans cet univers de la fusion entre les sonorités congolaises et celles venues d’ailleurs. C’est lui le père fondateur des « Tambours de Brazza. » Il est salué par moi en passant!
Et vous aviez sorti votre premier album Obhembi-Le Voyageur : existe-t-il une histoire derrière ce titre?
Le vrai titre de mon disque est : « The Traveler » qui donne Obhembi en Mbochi du Congo-Brazzaville et le Voyageur, dans la langue de Molière. Le titre Obhémbi ou le Voyageur parle de la rencontre incognito entre une femme et un homme qui voyagent pour une destination inconnue. De cette hasardeuse rencontre naît un coup de foudre. Leurs cœurs parlent et battent plus fort, l’un pour l’autre. Le temps s’arrête. Et déjà la femme voit son cœur s’en aller à mesure que s’éloigne cet inconnu. Manquant de force pour ravir son cœur, elle s’étonne de voir naître en elle ce sentiment étrange, subversif, envoûtant qui la fait tourner irrésistiblement vers l’inconnu qui s’éloigne toujours un peu plus. Qui donc est ce « ruba-cuore ou ce voleur de cœur ? » Il n’a jamais eu d’échange de paroles entre eux. Ils se sont juste regardés et l’étincelle a allumé un incendie dans leur cœur et laissé des ravages dont l’amour seul détient le secret.
Le titre phare de l’album, dirions-nous?
Exact, le titre phare est « The Traveler ou Obhémbi » comme son nom l’indique, c’est une chanson qui fait voyager son public et c’est une véritable ode à l’amour, avec une poésie bien soutenue. C’est un énorme coup de cœur pour moi. J’ai su mettre la sensibilité en musique avec de manière talentueuse. « Obhémbi » un folk plein de finesse et d’émotions. Depuis la sortie de ce titre, je continue de remplir les cœurs et les oreilles de chaleur, de sensibilité et de tendresse de tous les amoureux de la bonne musique et des connaisseurs de mon univers musical. C’est vraiment de la beauté musicale au superlatif absolu avec « The Traveler ».
Cet album a-t-il été déterminant pour votre succès en Italie?
Oui, mon titre « Obhémbi-Le Voyageur » touche toujours les cœurs des vrais connaisseurs de la musique. C’est à ce titre et par celui-ci que je viens d’ailleurs de gagner le trio du « Prix de meilleur titre, de la meilleure artiste et de la meilleure interprétation » le 09 avril 2022 à Rome en Italie dans une compétition de 36 groupes et chanteurs. J’ai été applaudie à l’unanimité par tous les membres du jury et par toute l’assistance dans la salle de compétition. J’étais la seule africaine à cette compétition artistique en Italie : c’est l’Afrique et la république du Congo qui gagnent !
Racontez-nous votre voyage italien : Comment s’est préparée cette tournée? Avez-vous un imprésario? Qu’avez-vous ressenti en recevant ce prix?
Je n’ai pas d’imprésario ou manager proprement dit. Je me débrouille avec tous ceux ou celles qui peuvent m’aider par passion, à l’instar de mon grand frère qui me pousse et m’encourage à croire en moi-même et à aller de l’avant pour sortir de moi le meilleur. C’est le résultat du travail bien fait artistiquement et musicalement. Cela étant, je suis à la recherche d’un agent, d’une attachée de presse, d’un label pour la sortie de mon prochain album et d’un tourneur manager tous professionnels pour la suite de ma carrière internationale. Que les embrouilleurs, les apprentis managers ou agents et tous ceux qui n’ont pas encore la fibre artistico-professionnels s’abstiennent. Car La Ninalogie est un état d’esprit, La Ninalogie c’est du talent encore à l’état pur et naturel. J’ai besoin des pros à mes côtés et non ceux qui viennent pour nous nourrir des promesses et espoirs sans lendemain. Le pouvoir à la musique et à la culture en général.
D’autres tournées en vue?
Oui, j’ai encore d’autres dates en vue pour des concerts, showcases et festivals en Europe, Afrique et Canada : Le 30 avril 2022 – Italie. Du au 04 au 08 mai 2022 – Sénégal. Du 09 au 14 mai 2022 – Sénégal. Du 22 au 24 juillet 2022 – France. Du 29 au 31 juillet 2022 Canada.
Je reste ouverte à des dates de concerts et festivals. Ma grande difficulté, c’est le manque d’un booking agent ou d’une agence de booking pour me trouver encore d’autres dates de concerts et festivals pour 2022 et 2023 et la gestion de ma carrière musicale. Je lance donc un appel à tous les professionnels de l’industrie musicale dans le monde de me contacter, afin de pouvoir découvrir mon univers musical pour une collaboration efficace et durable.
Comment peut se définir une artiste-chanteuse, auteure, compositrice et interprète à l’heure de la pandémie du 21eme siècle?
Ce n’est pas du tout évident avec cette pandémie. Tant bien que mal, la création artistique continue de faire son chemin. Aucun domaine artistique et culturel n’est épargné !
Quelles sont les langues qui vous portent le plus dans vos chants?
La musique c’est l’art de mélanger les sons. Moi, je mélange des langues dans mes compositions et dans mes interprétations : Je chante en français, en italien, en anglais, comme langues étrangères. Pour ne pas perdre mon originalité, je chante aussi dans les langues congolaises : en lingala, kikongo, lari et mbochi. Pour votre information, je suis un trait d’union comme -Nina Wateko- entre le Nord et le Sud du Congo-Brazzaville culturellement, artistiquement et musicalement. Je suis de Boko au sud par mon père et au nord par ma mère. Je suis polyglotte et chante et interprète bien mes chansons dans plusieurs langues congolaises. C’est un don que Dieu m’a donné. Tout est grâce!
Que faites-vous quand vous ne chantez pas?
Le chant est mon champ. Car j’ai le son dans mon sang ! Je passe 80% de mon temps à chanter et à écrire des chansons. En passant, je travaille dans l’administration de mon pays. La musique est ma passion innée. La chanson fait partie intégrante de ma vie.
Vous invoquez, dans vos interviews, le malaise induit par la sorcellerie dans la vie : l’art en règle générale, la musique et la littérature, en particulier, peuvent-ils gommer les effets néfastes de la sorcellerie souvent liée à l’Afrique mais qui est pourtant un phénomène universel?
Toutes ces facettes de l’art au pluriel -art, musique, littérature, etc.- sont les reflets de notre identité dans nos sociétés. Ces arts décrivent bien tout ce qui passe et se pense dans nos us et coutumes : ils véhiculent ou dénoncent souvent ces effets néfastes de la sorcellerie chez nous, c’est vrai. Mais il faudrait qu’il ait le suivi et la répercussion de ces messages artistiques par la publicité, la promotion et les expositions dans notre vécu et quotidien, afin que notre message dans ce cadre précis arrive à destination. Sinon c’est comme prêcher dans le désert. Même dans le désert il y a encore le son du puissant souffle du vent qui est entendu.
Le harcèlement sexuel est un autre fléau nuisible : existe-t-il dans le milieu artistique de votre pays?
Le harcèlement sexuel est un fait social aussi vieux que l’amour et le sexe dans le monde. Dans notre milieu artistique, je n’ai pas envie de dire que c’est pire. Car dans ce milieu qui a 90% des hommes dans tous les coins de l’industrie musicale, il y a le harcèlement sexuel qui tapit dans l’ombre à chaque étape de cette industrie musicale et dans ce milieu : partant des musiciens et certains patrons des groupes jusqu’aux tourneurs managers en passant par des producteurs et agents. Mais il suffit d’avoir sa personnalité et sa tête sur ses épaules pour ne pas devenir la proie des obsédés sexuels et autres prédateurs des femmes à tout bout de chemin. In fine, vous devenez la risée de ces mêmes hommes.
Fuyons la sorcellerie et le harcèlement sexuel et revenons à votre musique : à quand la prochaine production?
Actuellement, je suis en train de travailler en studio en France sur mon nouveau projet, malgré toutes les difficultés inhérentes liées à la pandémie. Je sollicite des labels, producteurs, booking agents et tourneurs de venir regarder ce qui se fait chez moi : ils ne seront pas déçus, car c’est du lourd et des bombes musicales que je suis en train de réaliser en studio. Sous l’œil vigilant de mon Directeur artistique « Le Maestro et cerveau penseur Jean Émile Biayenda en France, en complicité avec l’ingénieur de son, Monsieur Fabien, et toute la « squadra » des professionnels et requins des studios. Si j’ai un label qui voudrait signer avec moi, mon prochain album intitulé
« Ninalogie » sortira courant 2022 ou début 2023. Le tout dépendant du deal, car, jusqu’à ce jour je suis en autoproduction. Or, chaque corps de métier a ses mystères. D’où pour cette « Bombe musicale » comme l’appelle si bien mon ingénieur de son, je souhaiterais qu’elle sorte sur le marché discographique mondial sous l’étiquette d’un label bien connu.
Un conseil, un souhait?
Un conseil : chacun de nous doit croire à ce qu’il fait et réalise. Écouter surtout son fond intérieur ou son intériorité. L’intuition et l’inspiration ne trompent jamais. Faisons ce que nous sentons bien de faire venant de notre intériorité. Car la décision est personnelle. Un souhait : C’est de pouvoir avoir des vrais professionnels sur ma route artistique et musicale, sans oublier d’avoir un label, un booking agent, une attachée de presse et tour manager. J’invite aussi des sponsors de faire de moi une égérie de leurs produits, car la musique sans sponsors n’est pas facile.

Axolotls are members of a class of animals called amphibians, which also includes frogs. Amphibians lay their jelly-like eggs in water, and the eggs hatch into water-dwelling larval states. (In frogs, these larvae are called tadpoles.)
Most amphibians, once they reach adulthood, are able to move to land. Since they breathe, in part, by absorbing oxygen through their moist skin, they tend to stay near water.
