BLAISE NDALA – Une sacrée surprise
Blaise Ndala vit au Canada depuis 2007. Il entre dans le bal littéraire en publiant J’irai danser sur la tombe de Senghor, aux Éditions L’Interligne en octobre 2014, un roman qui sera porté à l’écran par le cinéaste Rachid Bouchareb. Il a publié aussi Sans capote ni kalachnikov, aux Éditions Mémoire d’encrier. Il a bien voulu répondre à nos questions.
De l’Afrique en Europe et de l’Europe en Amérique et soudain l’écriture : le rêve d’écrire porté depuis longtemps a trouvé enfin un terreau fertile en Amérique, plus précisément au Canada?
La réalité est fruit à la fois de la passion, ce mal incurable qu’il faut savoir entretenir, et de ce que l’on appelle communément le hasard. Un heureux hasard. Comme la grande majorité des écrivains, j’ai commencé à lire et à écrire dès la prime jeunesse, à l’incitation de mes parents qui étaient enseignants au Congo, alors Zaïre, en particulier de mon père Paul Ndala. Une passion précoce s’en suivra, que certains enseignants du primaire et du secondaire encourageront d’un cycle à l’autre, avant que mes études de droit prennent le dessus et tempèrent mes velléités d’écrivain refoulé. Après quatre années passées en Belgique où je reprendrai la plume avec davantage d’ardeur, c’est effectivement au Canada où je suis arrivé en 2007 que j’ai décidé, enfin, de me tourner vers un éditeur. Et quand je parle de hasard, c’est que cette décision ne fut pas mienne au départ. Comme mes proches le savent, c’est pour échapper au chantage d’une ex-copine qui avait trouvé un manuscrit qui sommeillait dans mes tiroirs et qui voulait l’envoyer aux maisons d’édition, que j’ai pris sur moi d’écrire une fiction. Non plus pour me faire plaisir et amuser la galerie, mais cette fois avec l’idée de passer de l’autre côté du livre. Telle est la genèse de J’irai danser sur la tombe de Senghor, mon premier roman publié aux Éditions L’Interligne à Ottawa.
Votre premier roman J’irai danser sur la tombe de Senghor, a rendu hommage aux boxeurs Africains-américains Mohamed Ali et George Foreman.
Quand on lit ce roman, on se rend compte que l’hommage à Mohammed Ali et George Foreman, et par extension, le retour au combat mythique du 30 octobre 1974, n’est qu’un prétexte d’écrivain. Ce roman historique se veut avant tout une fresque où l’auteur que je suis tente de repeindre la société zaïro-congolaise des lendemains de l’indépendance conquise par Patrice Lumumba et ses compagnons. Il a ainsi pour toile de fond cette époque où un certain Mobutu Sese Seko se présente à la fois comme démiurge pour un peuple en quête de figure tutélaire et un dictateur atteint de folie des grandeurs, autant adulé que craint. Une époque dont beaucoup de Congolais se rappellent comme d’un paradis perdu, mais qui n’était peut-être pas aussi mirifique que la mémoire sélective veut bien nous le faire croire, après que les Kabila eurent échoué à bâtir un État sur les cendres du mobutisme fringant.
Pourquoi danser sur la tombe de Senghor au Sénégal, quand le combat se passe au Congo à Kinshasa ?
Quant à l’allusion à Senghor, elle fait écho à la guéguerre que se livraient à fleurets mouchetés le père de l’authenticité, Mobutu, et celui de la négritude, Senghor. Dans la fiction, le plus grand combat de boxe de l’Histoire est une trouvaille du premier pour réduire le second à sa simple expression politique. Une sorte d’uppercut de l’ancien sergent de la force publique au poète et futur académicien à qui l’on doit le Festival mondial des arts nègres, inauguré à Dakar en avril 1966.
Aviez-vous personnellement vécu ce combat ou sont-ce les souvenirs racontés qui ont aiguisé votre imagination ?
Je n’ai pas vécu ce combat, mais une bonne partie de ma jeunesse a été bercée par ce que m’en a rapporté un de mes oncles, à qui je dédie d’ailleurs ce livre. Il était présent au Stade du 20 mai cette nuit où tout Kin-La-Belle scandait : « Ali, boma yé ! » Plus de quarante ans plus tard, il continue à en parler les yeux pétillants de bonheur. Amateur du noble art qu’il pratiqua au camp militaire CETA dans les années qui suivirent le combat, celui qui prendra le surnom de Noble était aussi un danseur hors pair, un fan fini du groupe Zaïko Langa-Langa. Ce n’est donc pas un hasard si ce groupe musical bien connu des Africains traverse le roman, s’il hante tant le personnage principal que l’on suit de son Kwilu natal dans le Zaîre profond, jusqu’à New York. Pour tout dire, s’il y a une personne qui m’a transmis l’âme qui habite ce texte, c’est bien cet oncle qui vit toujours à Kinshasa. Pour le reste, il y a eu un travail de recherche que j’ai mené à partir du Canada.
Et la lumière fut ! Un cinéaste d’Hollywood vous téléphone pour vous dire qu’il veut porter votre roman à l’écran !
Ce coup de fil du réalisateur franco-algérien Rachid Bouchareb, alors qu’il séjournait à Los Angeles pour des besoins de production, fut une sacrée surprise. Quant on vient de publier son premier roman, à moins d’avoir la folie des grandeurs à la « Papa Maréchal », on ne se couche pas le soir en espérant qu’un illustre réalisateur vous tire du sommeil pour vous parler d’un projet de film à produire à Hollywood. Mais c’est aussi cela, la magie de la littérature : le livre, une fois entre les mains de tiers, n’en fait plus qu’à sa tête. Pour revenir à ce coup de fil, ce fut le prélude d’une belle aventure qui suit son cours et dont j’attends patiemment le dénouement, car le temps cinématographique n’est pas le temps littéraire.
Suit ensuite Sans capote ni kalachnikov : de quoi parlez-vous dans deuxième roman ?
Sans capote ni kalachnikov est une fiction qui propose plusieurs grilles de lecture, mais je pourrais en livrer deux. D’une part, il essaie de montrer que l’un des «effets collatéraux» du regard que posa l’écrivain britannique Joseph Conrad sur le Congo en signant la célèbre nouvelle Au cœur des ténèbres, a abouti au renforcement de l’essentialisation de « l’Homme Africain », sujet réfractaire à « la civilisation », qui n’aurait pour seul horizon que la misère. D’où le titre Sona, viols et terreur au cœur des ténèbres, prêté au film documentaire sur lequel s’ouvre le roman. D’autre part, le livre qui joue ici sur la satire, suggère que ce type de représentations, si courantes dans les sociétés du nord où la force de l’image atteint le summum grâce à une hydre médiatique à qui rien ne résiste, n’est pas étranger au discours lénifiant sur l’aide à une Afrique que l’on dit engluée dans la pauvreté. Ce, d’autant plus que sur le terrain, toutes sortes de prédateurs, aussi bien locaux qu’étrangers, s’illustrent par des pratiques que les peuples qui luttent pour préserver leur dignité refusent de cautionner. Plutôt qu’un procès, de l’aide extérieure, il s’agit d’une invitation à savoir distinguer celle-ci de « l’égocharité » et autres avatars célébrés par la société de l’image.
Des prix pour vos ouvrages ?
Les prix ! Je mentirais si je prétendais être indifférent au fait d’en avoir gagnés ou -ce qui arrive plus fréquemment- de voir mes livres nommés pour tel ou tel autre prix d’ici ou d’ailleurs. Je suis néanmoins, de ceux qui pensent qu’il faut apprendre à faire comme si ces distinctions n’existaient pas. Autant elles font chaud au cœur et attestent de la reconnaissance par les pairs- ou par les lecteurs, selon le cas- de la modeste part qu’apportent nos écrits à la République éternelle des lettres, autant elles peuvent facilement corrompre l’écrivain qui aurait oublié d’observer une saine distance entre elles et sa plume. Je crois que les prix peuvent transformer l’artiste, que je vois comme un être soumis aux quatre volontés de sa passion, en un vulgaire coureur de breloques. Je le dis sans fausse modestie, mais je le dis surtout dans un but précis : que ceux qui m’aiment bien n’aient pas à me le rappeler. Ni demain, ni dans cent ans !

Nous connaissons tous au moins une jeune personne peu portée sur la lecture. Et si nous nous fixons pour objectif personnel d’essayer différentes approches pour en faire un rat de bibliothèque en devenir ?
